PE and Sport

Intent

At Altrincham CE Primary School, we believe that every child can achieve the aims of the National Curriculum through a broad, balanced and progressive Physical Education curriculum. Our staff are committed to adapting learning to meet the needs of individuals and groups, ensuring that children build secure foundations before moving on. This may mean revisiting prior learning to strengthen knowledge, skills and understanding. We are dedicated to developing the whole child, supporting physical, cognitive, social and emotional growth, while helping children to understand how to learn, apply and transfer their skills across different contexts.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum is delivered through the principles of Assessment for Learning and provides children with opportunities to experience both traditional and emerging sports and activities. Every child receives at least two hours of high-quality PE each week, regardless of weather conditions or other external factors, and we are committed to ensuring that all children can participate. Spare PE kits are available in every classroom so that no child misses learning opportunities. Inclusivity is at the heart of our provision, with support for children with SEND planned in the same way as other curriculum areas and activities differentiated using the STEP framework. A range of teaching styles, strategies and challenges are used to engage and motivate learners, while children who are temporarily unable to take part physically remain actively involved through roles such as officiating, coaching or evaluating.

Impact

Through our PE curriculum, children develop confidence, competence and enjoyment in physical activity while making progress across a range of learning domains. Careful monitoring of individuals, groups, classes and year groups allows us to identify strengths, celebrate success and provide timely support and challenge where needed. Children understand how to improve their performance, work towards specific targets and recognise the value of perseverance and effort. We communicate progress and achievement with parents through both verbal and written feedback, and we ensure that every child's achievements are recognised, valued and celebrated.
